Coming to England from Nigeria as a young boy of 7 and speaking no English, I developed a phobia for standing out from the crowd and especially for speaking out loud in a language that was so foreign to me. Few may believe this now that I am a barrister, author, ‘Toastmaster Advanced Speaker Gold’ and now vying for the Presidency of arguably the No.1 Toastmasters club in England. And yet it is all true.
It is because it is all so true that this public-speaking-frog turned Prince Charming of the speaking platforms now wants to bring all his experience of leading from the front to the service of the club to take us to the next level. And Yes, I am a leader! From Head Boy at Secondary School in the 70’s, to Chairman of a minority lawyers group in the ‘80s, to senior partner of a law firm in the ‘90s; to chairman of a publishing company in the ‘noughties, to Life President of a community football Club as we speak, I have grown accustomed to leading social groupings.
If you want to know more about me just Google ‘Dele Ogun’: there’s loads up there!

When I first joined Earlybirds 6 years ago I wanted to learn, grow and become a great public speaker. There were times when I struggled with my confidence, when I wasn’t as good as I wanted to be. In those moments the support and encouragement of our club picked me up and got me through. Now I have fun being on stage – and I never dreamed that at the start!
I would love the chance to give back! I want to provide the opportunities for growth and connection that I received, and nurture our members.
I have served the club as VP Education and VP Events. As VP Education I worked hard to ensure meetings ran effortlessly and were organised weeks ahead. I introduced the innovative Toastmasters Plus role to our morning meetings to allow all of our Toastmasters to experiment with new and exciting ideas. I connected with every single member to help them improve as communicators and leaders. I learned first-hand what makes this club tick and what matters to our members.
Our club is already of a high standard, but I believe we should never stop striving for excellence.
A vote for me is a vote to
– push your skills further with a series of full-length Speaker Development workshops
– refresh your membership experience as I work with the team to rethink everything that goes into how we run the club effectively
– pitch your wits against London’s other top clubs as we throw down the gauntlet for an innovative intra-club contest
and there’s more!

I’ve felt extremely welcomed as part of joining Early Bird Speakers and can personally feel the benefits already.
If the success of the club is the sum total of the effort its members put in, you’ve all done incredibly well to make the club what it is today.
I’d love a chance to contribute back by helping you all reach your goals, whatever the focus or level, giving you a nudge in the right direction.

We all come to Toastmasters to improve our public speaking, and it is the role of VP Education to move members along that journey. It’s also the VPE’s responsibility to ensure that as well as individuals reaching landmarks, the Club as a whole makes progress.
It’s a big role and anyone going for it should feel the weight of responsibility.
I am a long standing EBS member, representing the Club at three District Finals. This year I have been Sergeant-at-arms, and seen that EBS really is blessed with fantastic members who are proactive in making it world class, and one I’m very proud to be a member of.
The educational needs of the Club are a journey with no finish line, with members of all abilities. And yet it is a race we can all win together.
How do we do this? I believe the answer is accountability and communication. As VPE I would provide regular updates on our progress towards educational goals. I will be regularly updating a visual representation of our progress so that members can see how they are contributing to the Club. I know of no other collection of people so diverse and yet so ready to roll up their sleeves and make it happen. There are no passengers in EBS, and as VPE I see my job as being the sat-nav, or at least, petrol pump.
I hope you will elect me as VPE – I wouldn’t do it for anyone else.

As VP Membership it’s my aim to recruiting new members, retaining current club members and keep motivation high. EBS has a great system already and I would like to add to this with the following.
New Members:
- Work with aspiring members and getting them involved into duties straight away e.g. sergeant at arms assistant, help at events, EBS + etc.
- Make sure aspiring members know all the roles of the leadership team and have a clear idea which role they are running at the next election. We are hands on club with amazing benefits.
- With the above I also want to give the leadership team a better overview when voting.
Members:
- I want to work with existing members by actively promoting all the benefits of the club incl. events, organization opportunities and of course encouraging members passion for speaking.
- Increase communication between club members by making sure everyone has everyone’s contact details at all time.
- Making sure that members are welcomed, informed and encouraged about everything this amazing club has to offer.
Above all its my aim to keep motivation, energy and passion for EBS at a high level to make this club even more fun.
<– Here is my “Crazy Optimist speech” to prove that I really believe it. Watch it and smile 🙂

I was born on the island of Penang in Malaysia. I came to UK in 2008 and spent the first three years here living in Ipswich. After a period of quiet, peaceful countryside living, I relocated to London in 2011.
I specialise in the Compensation and Benefits side of HR, where I deal mainly with spreadsheets and numbers rather than people.
As for my interests, I love films and music… but am quite particular about the things I watch or listen to. Sometimes I am known to have slightly weird tastes.
Another totally random (fun) fact about me:
As a school girl trying to improve my English, I made pen-friends with girls from all over the world. As of today, I still remain friends with some of them – so that’s almost 30 years of correspondence! We have now graduated from letters to emails, and most recently (in the last couple of years) to Whatsapp.

Scott
There are secretaries, and then there are Secretaries.
The origin of the word quite literally means, ‘keeper of secrets.’
As VPE of the Club this year, I’ve been impressed by various qualities of the club, which are no secret to any visitor: the talent, preparation, and performance that our members bring to the meetings is clear.
Similarly, I’ve witnessed the resilience, perseverance and passion the Leadership Team has shown this year.
This is a critical year for the development of Early Bird Speakers. We are halfway through the transition of the Toastmasters educational programme (Pathways), and have other events in development (such as the Early Birds Oscars). Any good Leadership Team needs someone who can support them. Someone flexible. Someone who can operate in plain view – but also in the shadows. Trust in your keeper of secrets. We’re going places as a club.

Nina
I am sorry I cannot be with you on the 16 May for my presentation to you all. I am away on business, and unfortunately cannot extricate myself from the project.
However, please know that from wherever I am on the face of the planet – as my husband will aver! — my arms around any bank account are tight, and my wish is that funds are always under my strong personal accountability and control.
This is vital for you to know given my recommendation to you that you consider my candidacy for Treasurer.
I am not too proud to admit that you will have others who are equally to be considered for candidacy. And, indeed, you will cast your ballot as you see fit.
I will only say that I am well-positioned to support Early Bird Speakers with the function, given my personal commercial / finance / business acumen which includes Directorship experiences in corporate life (https://www.linkedin.com/in/nina-glass-1920341/) complemented by my familial role as She Who Must Be Obeyed, as Family Finance Manager.
Moreover, I am committed to Toastmasters as an organisation, and to Early Bird Speakers, as a Club. A member for nearly nine years of the Club, I have been with Toastmasters for a total of c. 13. A lucky number of years, one might say.
I wish you well in your considerations, feeling sure that whomever you decide to elect, given the quality of our Club, will make for a fine Treasurer for us all.
Best regards.
Nina

I’d be honoured to act as EBS Treasurer this year, and I’m asking you to vote for me. Why?
- I’m a qualified chartered accountant, internal auditor, external auditor and auditor of auditors (yes, it is a Thing). I’ve written UK auditing standards. This all means that I know my way around budgets and finances generally
- I’m currently a member of the leadership team (VP Membership) – meaning I’m experienced at working with the other members to deliver what I hope has been a most excellent service to the club this past year!
- One aspect of that role that I’ve really enjoyed and got a lot out of is talking with and encouraging guests, aspiring members, full members and inactive members – meaning that I get how to relate to the people who make up this wonderful club of ours – important when seeking to extract and manage the £££££££s
- I’m a qualified scientist, philosopher, drummer, writer and volunteer worker in the caring sector – and generally have an intense curiosity and love of Life and People – it’s not 100% about the numbers
- Thanks for reading!

Joining Early Bird Speakers in 2013 was one of the best decisions I can remember. The warmth, fellowship and opportunities for personal development are as evident as ever, whilst even the tamest Thursday morning meetings leave me feeling enriched. In light of all that EBS provides me, it’s time for some more payback.
I’ve served in this surprisingly satisfying role before, and feel there are still new things to learn and contribute by taking it on again. I am open to wise and sustainable suggestions for how changes to the role might serve the club better, but meanwhile – if elected – my focus would be on the efficient and reliable delivery of what we already do well.

I have been a toastmaster for two and a half years, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I have during this time taken all of the roles and visited clubs in South Africa, USA and of course the UK. I have been both VPE and president of other clubs. In addition I have been both a mentor and a mentee. As such I hope to pass on my knowledge and skills to old and new members alike while at the same time providing the time and commitment to ensure all my mentees receive the help and support they require.
At work I teach Psychology and Economics. These teaching skills facilitate my mentoring. As VPE mentoring I will not only be responsible for my own mentoring but also for the allocation of mentors to mentees and it is here that my organisational skills will come to the fore as well as listening skills developed from years of teaching.
With a team of mentees I hope to inspire members to get involved in the system and to give them guidelines on how to aid members as effectively as possible as well as being aware of needs of mentees so good matches can be made both from the point of view of the mentor and mentee.
In this way I will serve not only the members but also the club in general as both mentors and mentees benefit from the programme and as such will thrive.

Mentoring Matters
I have been mentoring people for more than 20 years, and as a Toastmaster have implemented mentoring programmes, as well as serving as a club mentor.
Mentoring helps us go further than we ever thought possible.
Mentoring helps inspire a fresh approach and give us a healthy nudge out of our comfort zone.
Mentoring matters because it can transform lives.
Mentoring is a commitment that we make to ourselves and fellow Early Birds to keep improving our skills. It’s also a gift we can all benefit from by sharing our knowledge and experience with each other.
Sadly, though, I find that sometimes people shy away from mentoring, fearing it will be too time consuming. So, flexibility of engagement is, in my experience, key. For instance:
- You might choose different mentors for developing different skills
- Sometimes you might have a brief sense-checking chat, while other times a longer engagement might be more appropriate
- You might have a discussion over breakfast, touch base on Zoom or even form a WhatsApp group. The choice is yours.
Mentoring is a two-way relationship where everyone’s a winner. As the former British Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli, said:
“The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own”
Vote Lyn for VP Mentorin’ and let’s do even more good for each other.

Dear Early Bird Speakers,
As a vice President of events i plan to continue a great job done by my predecessors.
If i am elected i would lead the club through colourful events which hopefully will help to keep the club’s vibe.
The first step for me would be understanding the club’s needs in this area and then develop a plan to meet them. I would like to engage with the members to see if there is something they want, something that we as a club have not done before or/and something that has been done before and that they particularly liked.
I also think about engaging with other clubs and their respective vice presidents of event to see how other clubs engage their members through “outside of the club” events.
Being on the committee this year would be a way for me not only to develop my skills in organisational area but most importantly to support the wonderful community of our club.
Monika

After my early education life, I completed my BSc Electronic & Electrical Engineering and MSc Electrical Engineering degrees and garnered substantial work experience starting as an IBM Customer Service Engineer and working my way through to General Manager (Network Engineering) at iTECO Ltd.
I came to the UK in 2002 for my MBA degree at the world-class Bradford University School of Management, Bradford. I am an IT Project Portfolio Manager in the Telecom and Pharmaceutical arenas, where I develop and execute organisation strategies delivering complex enterprise projects. I moved to London in 2013. I am a separated father of 3 daughters.
Philip has held other various technical and servant/leadership positions while in the UK which are essential to this EBS Technology Officer Leadership role. I have worked as Senior Project Manager at Motorola and IBM, and had a stint as Financial Investment Manager in a Private Equity firm. My last role was as Governance, Risk & Compliance Manager at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Philip Bruce is one of the first certified PMI Portfolio Management Professionals (PfMP) in the world, and at present seeking a new career role.
I am motivated to take up the Technology Officer role using my acquired skills over the years to inject a new life with the changing pace of technology into EBS demands while maintaining a high standard of service week in week out as needed.
